Now in our 43rd year of serving the Hastings community, Crossroads Mission Avenue continues to carry out our mission to bring glory to God through the helping of people. Bringing help and hope to the needy for so many years, Crossroads is now the largest provider of homeless services in the region, serving over 500 men, women, and families at our Hastings location in 2025. Our goal through Give Hastings Day 2026 is to raise funds to complete critical renovations on our aging building, so that we can continue to serve the Hastings community well for many years to come!
Through the years, the Mission has grown from a soup kitchen with one bed to a facility capable of housing 112 individuals daily, with our facility now in need of essential repairs and improvements. Every contribution through GHD will be multiplied 5x by FHLB grant funding, allowing Crossroads to serve our guests with integrity and respect as we partner to invest in the future needs of Adams County! The project will include foundational equipment upgrades to the plumbing, security, and electrical systems, as well as replacement of HVAC units, exterior doors, and windows. Renovations will increase efficiency, lower operating costs, and eliminate excessive maintenance and repair costs. This investment in the community will pay dividends for generations to come, allowing Crossroads to continue to step in with vital homeless services when our struggling neighbors need us most!
Crossroads continues to meet the needs of the homeless in Central Nebraska, with comprehensive care that includes safe shelter, hot meals, life skills classes, and case management to help guests gain employment, financial independence, and stable housing. Our 4-Phase Recovery program and personalized case management, along with transitional housing, equip our guests for successful living after their time at Crossroads and lead to homelessness prevention. In 2025, Crossroads Mission Avenue provided 30,654 nights of stay and 91,962 meals to unsheltered men, women, and families in Hastings, and over 3,800 food boxes for our needy Adams County neighbors! Our Hastings Mission Avenue Thrift Store provided over $30,000 worth of clothing and basic necessities at no charge to needy individuals throughout 2025. With our grant funding, your donation NOW will receive a 5x match! We couldn't do it without the faithful support of the Hastings Community!
Joy came to Crossroads with her teenage children, having run out of housing options, stating, "My biggest challenge before coming to the Mission was stability. Before I came to [Crossroads], I felt lost, with nowhere to go. We decided to come here to the Mission, and it's been a blessing. My kids have been succeeding in school. It's been a blessing in disguise, and I'm so thankful."
At 65 years old, life-long Nebraska resident Myron found himself newly divorced, coming out of incarceration. He says, "I got out, and I had absolutely no place to go. My biggest challenge before coming to the Mission was staying alive because, when I left the penitentiary, I knew I had nothing, and I was leaving with nothing. And if it wasn't for [Crossroads] and even probation, I wouldn't be on this Earth anymore. I know a lot of people don't have a high perspective of people that are coming through the door here, and they think they're just low-down losers. They don't realize what kind of struggle it is. I am thankful for the mission because they've helped show me that I don't have to live in the gutter. I don't have to rely on drugs. I just got a lot of guidance here."
Carman admits, "My circumstances are different than some folks. I have been divorced over eight years and was getting established, and then my life did a turnaround because my identity was taken. And so, in that process, I lost everything. I was homeless. I ended up for about a week with no place to really plant my head, put my feet, and take a shower or get a hot meal. [When I first came], the facility was really full. There wasn't an open bed yet for me. They didn't turn me away. I mean, they could have, but they didn't turn me away. They found a place ... I had a cot for the first night. I was safe. I was warm. I'd had a hot meal. I was comforted. There was a light on. I felt safe, and, um, from there, you know, the next morning I got up with the resolve that I was going to make the best of a bad situation, which ended up not being a bad situation. Before coming to the Mission, I was in despair. After arriving at the Mission, my life has been a blessing. I am thankful to [Crossroads] because they opened their doors to me when they could have shut them. And they didn't. They had enough love in them to share God's grace with me."
