For generations, visiting the wooden cartoon and holiday characters has become a Hastings holiday tradition. The Hastings Community Foundation, working with a group of local volunteers, helps to keep this tradition alive by displaying the characters around Fisher Fountain.

The display originated in 1965 by Sandy and Dorothy Schaffroth at 11th and Minnesota. Rob and Carolyn Ramsey then displayed it at their Garfield Avenue residence for nearly 30 years. George and Josie Anderson brought the characters to Fisher Fountain in 2001. Originally, the display was only comic strip characters. It has since grown to include familiar faces from cartoons, TV, film - and even has a special mailbox where children can leave a letter for Santa.
